Attacks in Oaxaca City Leave 3 Dead, 11 Wounded and 2 Missing, NYC Indymedia journalist killed
Sunday, October 29th, 2006 at 19:00
Just received 2 emails regarding NYC Indymedia journalist Brad Will being shot by paramilitaries in Oaxaca, and been searching the international media for this breaking news, and shocked that there is so little appearing. Deep gratitude to Indymedia for covering these very tense events in Mexico so thoroughly and deep respects to Brad Will for being on the front lines to bear witness. As for the rest of the media : WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU ?!!
Just a few hours earlier the BBC had a pathetic and spineless story about Vicente Fox’s need to restore order and has already been re-edited/over-written, but still the 3 deaths, one of which is a journalist, remains practically a footnote.
And what the corporate media does not dare communicate is that Vincente Fox and his government have been in deep shit because communities in the region of Oaxaca have taken direct action ( including a massive teachers’ strike closing THOUSANDS of schools) protesting corruption and the govt’s repressive tactics and demanding the resignation of state Governor Ulises Ruiz. In other words this is not some radical fringe and “left-wing groups”; this is the very heart of civil society that has made demands for immediate change and are widely supported by the general public!
Now paramilitaries have invaded Oaxaca, backed by helicopters, tanks and armoured vehicles.
Not to lessen the severity of Any deaths, but it is of utmost importance to note that another journalist has been murdered by a violent regime, and most of the media remains a bunch of silent useless fuckers!
On October 6th, Democracy Now reported that 2006 was the deadliest year for journalists, already marked by 75 casualties. This is a story that needs to be covered in every media! And Brad Will is the latest victim. Journalists wake up! Time to stand in solidarity ! Time to express the outrage !
And of course Brad Will is not the only tragic loss of life here. It is also time to right the deplorable coverage of the indigenous struggles occuring in Mexico.
The latest news on Indymedia, is that there are now thousands in the streets and the dispatched federal police have begun their assault on Oaxaca City. ((i)) Read breaking news : in English y en español en Centro de Medios Libres, Indybay and NYC
