Last year, Philips, the multinational Dutch electronics company attacked a number of small (+ vulnerable) businesses in the area to collect money on an extremely obscure DVD coding/index patent, before it expires in 2012! A corporate fishing expedition. Pigasus Shop in Torstr. 62 – in Mitte -became one of their victims, and having lost in court this summer, owe nearly € 15,000 + lawyers’ fees.

And, as we were in the shop this week, a few more gruesome ( and tragi-comic) details emerged. Philips had confiscated all DVDs from the shop last December. Now in July, some boxes are finally returning after being held hostage, and only after mountainous bureaucracy, a hired lawyer’s counter-pressure, and coughing up some of the ransom .
Nearly all of the DVD packaging had been slashed open, and a note explained which DVDs were not returned. Only a few out of hundreds of DVDs are apparently in violation of their code ( which really has nothing to do with shopkeepers, but distributors + labels’ responsibilities, but that’s too bloody long a detail for here.) One of which is a Polish-made Children’s Animation Film, which remains ILLEGAL until 2012.
And you know for sure, THE KIDS JUST DON’T FUCKING CARE ABOUT THE MONEY-GRUBBERS’ GAME !
