< 1.12 > Globale invites: open roundtable discussion “Becoming the media” at New Yorck in Bethanien, Berlin

“Becoming The Media”
with: AkKraak, Joanne Richardson, XL Terrestrials, Globale

December 1st / Tuesday 19.30 New Yorck in Bethanien “Raum für emanzipatorische Projekte” Südflügel Mariannenplatz 2A, Kreuzberg

The former censorship of the mainstream media has now turned into new and more refined forms of disinformation, based on overload and noise rather than the removal of information. At the same time, the claim for the democratization of the media, which in the past 10 years gave birth to a large number of independent media projects, seems to have empowered the web 2.0 user-generated content platforms.

-What is the use of counter-information in such media environments? -Does something like a “General Public” still exist? -And what about media activism aside from the patterns of leftist propaganda?

These questions are proposed as possible starting points for an open roundtable organized by Globale Film Festival together with filmmakers and groups who are making a political use of images, in order to think together and discuss different tactics and strategies. The participants will show one or more video excerpts taken from their own works or others which can be shown as examples to feed the discussion. To be continued. All global citizens are welcome.

With respect to international participants, the discussion shall be in English.

{ Amy Goodman raising a fist in Vancouver }

As we assemble some texts for our psychomedia contributions to the theme above, we came across the news of Amy Goodman and her crew from Democracy Now having been detained and searched at the Canadian border on her way to giving a talk at a public library in Vancouver. One of the most important journalists working in broadcast media today, she was held for an hour, searched by armed border guards, interrogated about the content of her speech, and given papers requiring her to leave the country within 3 days time.

We highly recommend taking time to view this archive of her talk from the Vancouver Media Coop ( thanks to Frank Lopez and crew ), which reveals a great deal about the state of both media and democracies, and what urgency lies upon our shoulders to reclaim the present, and reclaim our future.

“It is very important that we feel free to be able to speak. in canada. in the united states. because dissent is what will save us. we live in very dire times. global warring, global warming, the global economic meltdown, the lack of healthcare in the US, these are crises that need people other than those typical pundits we see on all the networks who know so little about so much, explaining the world to us and getting it So Wrong! ” A.G.

With that said, we do see that a more sophisticated media analysis and praxis will be essential to enable communities to organize … and to extract ourselves from an overwhelmingly (more) efficient apparatus of “reality threading” ( and gatekeeping ) at the lower grades.

tbc…

Possible clips from the XLt archives laid out on the couch for educational + tactical purposes :
