HoT Spots in Berlinopolis … part 6 : 24c3
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007The 24th Chaos Communication Congress is coming once again to the heart of Mitte at the Berliner Congress Center (BCC), under the shadow and blinking red-eyed phallus, the Fernsehenturm ( tv tower), and surrounded by the holidazed zombie shoppers of Alexanderplatz. But alas the hacker orphans, in replenished droves, come from the 4 corners tunnelling […]

Re:place hosts a Cyberfeminist Reboot, Taking Aim Beyond The Meta-mediation
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007If you are a wide-scoped and socially engaged artist already wary and/or already taking aim at the specimen harvesting of new media and the science-infused art industry for their refined Spectacle lubricants, a conference about the histories of technology, science, the humanities, and art is treading a treacherously thin and grease-splattered ice. And while Re:place, […]
Re:place in Berlin
Friday, November 16th, 2007We will only be catching the last day of Re:place Conference in Berlin. No chance to provide preview info here before travelling there, and no links to other blogs as yet, but the program is full of backround info, and a massive list of presenters, many of which were just here in Praha for Mutamorphosis.
Mutamorphosis, Day 3: “The Laboratory Planet” and an External Drive
Monday, November 12th, 2007While Mutamorphosis has been full of people with an inspiring wealth of knowledge and pioneering creative direction, the event as a whole struggled to grapple with the bigger picture of what art and science as a collaborative medium might become for our seriously challenged times. Ironically the one “Paper” that provided the most potent articulation of […]
Mutamorphosis… Day 2: What Progress of Roses?!
Saturday, November 10th, 2007We came imagining that we needed urgently to gather up all our arts + science limbs and muscles, hearts and brains, and Act Accordingly, and yes we need all that because the urgent necessities scream out all around us. We came imagining that the planet will require some collective interventions that must proceed immediately on […]

Frank J. Malina: From Rocket Science To Open Communications Bridging Arts and Sciences
Tuesday, November 6th, 2007Perhaps one of the most crucial aspects of looking both backward and forward at the paths of Frank J. Malina (1912-1981) is his unique pivotal turn from a brilliant scientist suddenly at the core of new military trajectories to establishing a journal and network for international cooperation and open communication between the arts and sciences. A preview of the Mutamorphosis conference in Prague
Monday, October 29th, 2007The Mutamorphosis conference is an extraordinary convergence of artists and scientists coming together in Prague, Nov. 8-11, combining the 40th anniversary of Leonardo, and overlapping with the annual International Festival for Arts, Sciences, and Technologies – Enter3 – organized by the Czech Academy of Sciences. More than enough futurological themes to stretch your mind between […]
The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas at MoCA, LA
Monday, October 22nd, 2007Opening yesterday at the MoCA in Los Angeles is an exhibition of Emory Douglas’ art made while he worked as minister of culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 until its discontinuation in the early 1980s. Organized by Sam Durant, with the assistance of ** Alden and Mary Kimbrough** and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics the show features approximately 150 works and runs until Jan.20, 2008. An excerpt from the MoCA site: “With a firm understanding of the need to disseminate information and communicate the party’s agenda visually, Douglas’s bold illustrations and striking images spoke forcefully to a community ravaged by poverty, police brutality, and poor living conditions.

Friday, October 12th, 2007The San Francisco Chronicle has reached a new pinnacle of professional journalism this week by giving CW Nevius, sports writer and veteran Rotten Tomatoes film reviewer, a new editorial column on the front page. In a brilliant move to rouse the citizens of our great city to NIMBY extremism, Nevius has been given the noble task of investigating one of the Neo-Con Republicrat party’s most beloved problems: getting rid of homeless people. His new creative style of polling should elevate the discussion amongst fans of Survivor, Fox News, and American Idol.

Ironically it’s (Fuck) Columbus Day, and while this didn’t just happen overnight, we are starting to feel as though this may mark the new era whereupon the latest wave of colonizers began drawing up their company charters inside our pants, having landed on the deepest shores of inner “psychogeography” (an opposite context) with that frothing eye of $cience-cum-plea$ure as their compa$$.

Friday, October 5th, 2007We’re still looking for the quote, but we think it was Roland Topor who once said his worst nightmare would be to have his stomach turned inside-out. But then there’s Pron, that simulated red-lit back-alley bardo of perpetually unfinished business where technology and porn commingle and conceive. And when the marketplace reaches into your sexuality as far as those elongating product-lusting fingers can go, it might very well be that orgasmic fluids come to resemble a new gastric juice served up more horror and fantasy-fresh than anything Topor might have dreamed.

Sunday, September 30th, 2007Two years ago at the Kesselhaus in Berlin, we were fully entranced by the eastern Romanian masters of Balkan brass, Fanfare Ciocarlia, who ended their roaring set by descending from the stage and playing nearly an entire 2nd show in the midst of the crowd. Last night Balkan Beat Box spliced that frenzied custom into their intro, beginning their percussive and horned assault from the balcony of The Great American Music Hall, and weaving their way through the crowd. When they finally arrived onstage, Tomer Yusef - rapper, percussionist, and frenzy-conductor - declared, “This is not a live show… this is a party!

This group is on fire, and the latest album Nu-Med has a kind of global solidarity underpinning that feels like it is the new Clandestinos anthem, adding a brass kick and mediterranean-jacked rap to unify the latest rise of smiling warriors on the march !

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007(Stills from Alfonso Cuaron’s clip for “The Shock Doctrine”: Watch Here.) Making stops in San Francisco 9/26 and Oakland 9/28 , Naomi Klein is on tour with her latest precision analysis “The Shock Doctrine”. Could anyone still sleep through this fire, after absorbing her assessments of free market feeding time in neo-liberal overdrive over the last four decades?! While we haven’t had a chance to get ahold of the book yet, judging from this incredible collaboration with filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, and her recent appearance on Democracy Now this is one of the most disturbing and spot-on critiques of the current nightmares we are living through today.

Monday, September 10th, 2007In Baudrillard’s theories in “Simulacres et Simulation“, he once wrote with both irony and penetrating critique that Disneyland was created so that Americans would think that the world they live in is real. Turning Green in The American Rear View Mirror, Burning Man Analyzed From A 10 Year Distance
Friday, August 24th, 2007In the 1950s, Wilhelm Reich, the jewish Galician-born scientist – more commonly considered Austrian – ( this is entirely speculative: but does this mean that good ol’ Dr. Reich was mixing up those orgone theories with the love of the Bukowina stylee? Hoopa !! Maybe we’ll have to come back to that thought) psychotherapist and sex researcher attempted a GREENING of the Arizona desert, and his investigations still remain a labyrinth of hidden knowledge. Friday, August 3rd, 2007As we are preparing to present our next media deconstruction and analysis event (XLT ^s. Werner Herzog Enters The Leni Riefenstahl Hall Of Shame Twice, and Little Dieter Will Certainly Not Be Rescued By Hollywood Dawn

XL Terrestrials Crash Land In Hollywood
Saturday, March 31st, 2007XL Terrestrials made an emergency landing in the Hollywood Hills yesterday. The LA Times is reporting that 2 teenagers from Illinois were setting off fireworks and turned themselves into police that afternoon. Initially detained by LAPD officers and then released to their parents’ custody, they are pending possible prosecution for reckless fire setting. But the story is a cover-up for the city that remains entirely vulnerable to alien invasions and conscious visitations. Later that night 2 of the aliens appeared at Telic Arts Exchange in Chinatown to deliver the message that the Psychomedia Capital is responsible for spewing millions of Spectacle terrabytes into the psychic atmosphere per year and that the situation regarding the mental stability of the planet has become dire.

More...The Bureau of Public Secrets with an upgraded english version of “The Society Of The Spectacle” screened at ATA, and what about S.O.S. 2.0 you ask??
Friday, February 23rd, 2007“The only interesting venture is the liberation of everyday life, not only in a historical perspective, but for us, right now. This project implies the withering away of all the alienated forms of communication. The cinema, too, must be destroyed.” G. Debord … The Society of the Spectacle is neither an ivory tower philosophical discourse nor a helplessly impulsive protest, but a ruthlessly lucid examination of the most fundamental tendencies and contradictions of the society we live in. This means that it needs to be reread (and reseen) many times, but it also means that it remains as pertinent as ever while countless radical and intellectual fads have come and gone.

Friday, February 23rd, 2007Last night Station 40 hosted a Viral Video Olympics night, which was like a couch potato’s media seppuku ritual. A scene which could have been a gorey cubicle outtake from the 9-5 lunch break with fellow wage-slaves unable to unplug their online umbilical/existenz cords. But this cozy public living room of the old Mission District former post office, a gathered community armed with spontaneous pirate flagging and street-art scalpel smarts, and the panel of expertly odd judges transformed it into a den of hilarious DIY media a few notches past over-indulged, like the amp turned to 11.

DICTIONARY OF WAR sets out to oppose war and, at the same time, calls for “desertion” from a war of words in which facts are created with such force in their communication and propaganda that they can no longer be challenged.” from www.dictionaryofwar.org more coming soon to the guerrilla semiotics Podopolog nearest You!

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007Grab your sweetheart(s) and take em down to where the Insurrection Landscaping gets HOT!! February 14: Land Grabs San Francisco’s entire history is based on land grabs, within its own borders and far beyond. Sketching this history to the present, we will also look at counter-efforts to grab land and to create open and cooperative spaces in an ever more commercially tyrannized society. (Chris Carlsson, Erick Lyle, James Tracy) At CounterPulse TONIGHT ! AND HEY and he’s organizing another bike tour on somewhat similar topic for the weekend: “… then on Sunday, I’ll be conducting a 4-hour tour on the topic of “Dissent”… meet at 12 at CounterPULSE and bring water and snack, be ready for rain (hard rain cancels, occasional drizzle won’t stop us…).
More...Monochrom’s leftist hemisphere Exploratorium
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007Well while we are awaiting some visuals from Sunday night’s Monochrom visit at the Exploratorium, we thought we should analyze the burning wreckage left by the prankmeisters of Vienna… Because any traces left by these articulate and transnational leg-pullers may have fair and future use for escaping your own homeland debris and finding/formatting more bricks to throw at the pop culture screens. The McBean Theater was filled to the brim with Squidlisters and Re/Searchers, which made for a ruckus and supportive house to play the live-audience game in this attempted point-blank tv talk show shoot.
More...Monochrom is back in SF to excavate “The Talk Show” from America’s mass media graves!
Saturday, February 10th, 2007Monochrom, a Viennese art-technology-philosophy group known for developing a number of highly controversial Improvisational (Art) Implosion Devices, will be at the Exploratorium in SF this Sunday to attempt to disengage and/or detonate one of the most lethal American mass media forms: The Talk Show. About: ” Among their projects, monochrom has released a leftist retro-gaming project, established a one baud semaphore line through the streets of San Francisco, started an illegal space race through Los Angeles, buried people alive in Vancouver, and cracked the hierarchies of the art system with the Thomann Project.

That’s “Transmigration Of Cinema” for all you slackheads just tuning in… Welcome! Slackers ( yes, “praise slack!” even in 2007, minus the xtra retro-cheese and quite possibly all that [se]x-ist wanking ! ) situationists, cacaphonists, jammers, media contortionists and escape artists, future re-writin hacklabbers, and sustainability/realtime tinkerers are all a part of our color palette and calling. More...Jodorowsky films at The Castro, El Topo and Holy Mountain and some psychomagic updates
Saturday, January 20th, 2007This is a pure web teaser! There is no Sons of El Topo project to see in the cinema, the proposed sequel to Jodorowsky’s cult classic El Topo. But both this 1970 oddity-masterwork (which was the beginnings of the midnight movie due in part to Lennon and Yoko Ono) and Holy Mountain are screening at Castro theater this weekend, which means something must have recently occurred in the film’s legal status…having been locked up in a decades-long struggle with producer Allen Klein.

Friday, January 19th, 2007Yep, there’s a magazine dedicated to hactivism and new media which runs a pretty mean gamut from up-to-speed resistance measures to music reviews on the outer limits to cultural oddities that will keep you on your toes… Nueral.it In hardcopy it is supposedly available at Cody’s Books in the Bay Area, but you can also dig in onlne in eng and italian. No. 26 : Disturbing the System has bundles of info that you should be downloading into your consciousness and your toolkit immediately.
More...The 12th “Berlin and Beyond” lends a few more hammers and hacksaws with which to shape society…
Wednesday, January 17th, 2007Goethe’s 12th “Berlin and Beyond” festival at the Castro looked a little thin and fluffy from the program at first glance, but we are very happy to have our first impression totally dismantled. All of the films we have seen in this year’s selection so far have either proven to be unexpected surprises, engaging, intense, challenging, or in a couple cases, curious fodder for XL terrestrial (propaganda) analysis. And this year’s filmmaker panel session grappled with the complexities of “violence in film”, which reflected a recurring theme from many featured guest directors.

Saturday, January 13th, 2007We think it might be important for those who have made the pilgrimage to Macworld this week to get a grip on the fact that unless the new iphone has upgrades to work underwater and/or during the next ice age, withstand ied-s, and/or annihilate the deathstar of the warmongers… there’s not really much social progress that will be made with a phone, an ipod , and a camera wrapped into one ( wow, revolutionary as a latte with xtra foam on valencia street!

Wired for progre$$: Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men, Rupert Pupkins and the Ick Factor, body hacking, body shoppers, and more 23c3 perpectives
Tuesday, January 9th, 2007When Neil Postman used to analyze the Media Ecology and the Technopoly he’d say that we were becoming heavily wired for a catastrophic excess of solutions to problems that didn’t previously exist, and that even our language for expressing the new social complexities was migrating into forms more groomed for pushing hair products. Then as the Age of Biotech was just beginning to get us into slippery-slope wetware re-designed it quickly went molecular, so that the Ick Factor became a little too abstract to alarm or nauseate the uninitiated citizen/human.
More...Ceský Sen (Czech Dream) played the ATA to a packed house
Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007Somewhat surprising and very unfortunate for US audiences that nearly 2 years after winning best documentary at the SF International, no one’s picked this film up for cinema or dvd distribution, but it’s available from their own site. Czech Dream makes a highly instructional piece for pulling back the shabby curtains on mass media, advertising firms, and the hypermarketed every-Man in a way that reveals the sausage-making of manipulative campaigns and should spawn a new wave of pranking collision-course consumerisms. And here we get a taste of the east-block currently undergoing the high-speed colonization “upgrades” to shopping-mall democracy.
